How to use the 4.5kg ABE extinguisher

To use the extinguisher you will first need to pull out the safety pin. This metal safety pin prevents the operating lever from being pressed accidentally. You then have to depress the operating lever. The lever pushes on an actuating rod, which presses a spring-mounted valve down which opens up the passage to the nozzle.

The proper way to use the extinguisher is to aim it directly at the fuel, rather than the flames themselves, and move the stream with a sweeping motion.

What is a dry chemical fire extinguisher?

Dry chemical fire extinguishers are special pressurized devices that release dry chemicals to put out a fire. They are intended to put out small fires and keep small fires from spreading until the fire brigade arrives.

How does a 4.5kg dry chemical powder extinguisher work?

Dry powder extinguishers release an dry chemical powder extinguishing agent when the handle is squeezed. This extinguishant is forced out of the extinguisher under pressure by a non-flammable gas, in this case it’s nitrogen. The powder then smothers the fire and prevents re-ignition by removing one of the fire causing elements such as oxygen. As well as suppressing the flame in the air, it also melts at a low temperature to form a layer of slag which excludes oxygen from the fuel. Dry chemical powder is the best agent for fighting fires involving the multiple classes of fire types A, B and E.

Negatives to using the 4.5kg dry chem extinguisher

The  downside of using a dry chemical powder is the fact it is extremely messy. Once it is fired the powder is projected over a large area. The powder should be fully cleaned up after using on a fire and the powder should be disposed of correctly.

What is the powder in a dry chemical powder fire extinguisher?

The dry chemical powder consists of monoammonium phosphate and/or ammonium phosphate. It is effective on Class A, B & E type fires.
