CO2 Fire Extinguishers

One of the benefits of CO2 fire extinguishers is the fact they are great for fires involving electrical equipment, as they can extinguish the fire without causing any further damage to the equipment or surrounding equipment.

Carbon dioxide CO2 fire extinguishers are equipped with a distinct black coloured band, placed around the top of the cylinder. These are the ideal candidates for dealing with fires in offices, communication rooms or server rooms, as they are most effective on fires involving electrical apparatus.

Aegis Safe offers a range of CO2 type extinguishers, available at 5 kg, 3.5 kg and 2 kg respectively.

Carbon dioxide CO2 fire extinguishers are suited for the following types of fires:

  • Class B – Flammable liquids
  • Class E – Electrically energised equipment

CO2 Fire Extinguishers

CO2 fire extinguisher overview

CO2 fire extinguishers are used predominantly for handling electrical fires, Class E, and are most commonly found in offices and computer server rooms. They are also used for putting out Class B fires (flammable liquids, such as petroleum and paint).

Label colour:

  • Black

Use for:

  • Electrical fires
  • Flammable liquids, like petrol and paint

Do not use for:

  • Flammable metals
  • Combustible materials like textiles, wood or paper
  • Kitchen fires, like chip-pan fires

How CO2  fire extinguishers work:

  • CO2 fire extinguishers displace the supply of oxygen that the fire needs to continue burning, eventually suffocating it.

Types of buildings and business who may need CO2 extinguishers:

  • Buildings with electrical equipment, such as:
    • Server rooms
    • Construction sites
    • Kitchens
    • Offices

Some work vehicles can also be equipped with a smaller 2kg CO2 fire extinguishers.

Use of CO2 fire extinguishers

CO2 fire extinguishers were specifically developed for dealing with liquid fires like burning petrol. The inert CO2 gas separates the oxygen from the liquid surface and prevents the fire from continuing to burn.

Nowadays, CO2 fire extinguishers are mainly utilised in modern offices against electrical fires. The CO2 does not damage the computers, nor does it leave any residue. However, the extremely sensitive electronic equipment might get damaged due to the electrostatic shock from the CO2, along with the cold temperature of the CO2 when it is released.

We also offer commissioning and installation services of CO2 fire extinguishers. Feel free to give us a call and our certified fire technicians will visit your site.

What is a CO2 fire extinguisher?

  • CO2 fire extinguishers contain CO2 (carbon dioxide) in a highly compressed form (55 bar pressure).
  • CO2 is inert and will evaporate without any trace. It works by starving and suffocating the fire of oxygen.
  • CO2 becomes very cold, expanding through the jet (horn). The coldness level is so severe that the gas might cause frost damage to the skin. So, make sure the fire extinguisher you select is equipped with a frost-free horn.
  • CO2 fire extinguishers shouldn’t be stored in direct sunlight or near radiators, due to the high pressure inside them. When they get hot, the pressure rises quickly, which subsequently increases the pressure volume.

A safety valve gets opened immediately, releasing the high pressure. As a result, the amount of CO2 inside the extinguisher diminishes significantly. Also, it’s highly advised to not use the CO2 extinguisher, without the horn being fitted. Because, the horn reduces the pressure, and if removed, will cause the CO2 fire extinguisher to significantly discharge at a rapid pace. This can lead to a detrimental situation, or a violent recall causing a serious injury.

The CO2 extinguisher is extremely popular and is mainly utilized against Class E electrical fires & Class B fires.

They can be utilised against electrical equipment regardless of whether it’s low or high voltage.

They are also highly effective to deal with flammable liquid like petrol, butane, propane and solvents.

How do carbon dioxide fire extinguishers work?

The carbon dioxide fire extinguishers are equipped with liquid carbon dioxide, which gets released into the air when the extinguisher is used, neutralising the supply of oxygen for the fire, subsequently disabling its ability to spread.

This is an effective method of smothering fires and also preventing them from reoccurring due to the ice-cold temperature of CO2 and the lack of oxygen supply while being released from the extinguisher.

Where is a CO2 fire extinguisher most suitable for use?

These extinguishers are ideal for spaces using electrical equipment:

  • buildings
  • restaurants
  • workshops
  • offices

What are the frost free horns on CO2 fire extingiushers?

It is crucial that while investing in a CO2 extinguisher, make sure to check out whether its equipped with a frost-free horn. The CO2 gas is ice cold when it is released from the extinguisher. If the horn of your CO2 extinguisher is not frost free, your hand might get frozen while using it, leading to serious injuries. Frost free horns are specifically designed so that the user can withstand the freezing effect of the gas and hold it effectively. If the horn of your CO2 extinguisher is not frost free, we strongly recommend that you shouldn’t hold it.

Our vast range of CO2 fire extinguishers are equipped with frost free horns.

CO2 fire extinguishers (Carbon Dioxide)

Unlike a dry chemical powder or foam extinguisher, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers don’t leave any residue. A non-corrosive and non-conductive gas, carbon dioxide gas is utilised for reducing the quantity of oxygen available to the fire.

They can also be utilized against Class B fires, the types of fires that originate from flammable liquids such as petrol and paraffin. These fire extinguishers work by cutting off the air supply and subsequently don’t allow oxygen to fuel the fire.

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers (CO2) are also equipped with a black band or label around the top of the cylinder. In the CO2 fire extinguisher, carbon dioxide is stored at a high pressure in a liquid state after being extracted from the atmosphere.

How to identify a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher?

CO2 fire extinguishers that are produced adhering to BS EN 3 must have a black band that encompasses 5-10% of the surface area of the fire extinguisher and a red coloured body (RAL 3000).

CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) fire extinguishers can be easily identified via a black coloured label. According to the British Standards, the main body must be of red colour, and also must have a large black banner across the top. The banner should be placed on the front of the extinguisher and must have a writing in white, stating “Carbon Dioxide”. Older CO2 extinguishers are entirely black. However, they don’t adhere to the relevant British Standards anymore and must be disposed off in an eco-friendly way.

Which types of fire must be dealt with CO2 extinguishers?
Carbon Dioxide extinguishers are most suited for putting out Flammable Liquid and Electrical (Class B) Fire types.

The fire extinguisher testing, inspection and maintenance regime is specified in the Australia Standard AS 1851 – Maintenance of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment.
